ACCESS TO DOCTORAL STUDIES

 

The candidate who wishes to carry out doctoral studies must follow the following instructions:

1. Choose a research line from one of the Doctoral Programmes that fits your profile as a research trainee.

2. Contact a researcher in the chosen line, corresponding to the field of the thesis you wish to carry out, to propose your project, as well as the supervision/tutoring of your thesis.

3. Apply for admission to the Doctoral Programme, and submit the required documentation established by the Doctoral School, as well as other additional documents that appear on the website of the chosen programme.

4. Complet the fields and upload the required documents in line with to the access route to the Doctoral programme. Please refer to the ‘Documentation’ tab.
 
5. Accept the disclaimer and press continue.
 
6. Once the application has been submitted, the student will receive a confirmation message that the request has been received in the Electronic Office.
 
7, You can check the status of the application by accessing the PERSONAL FOLDER of the Electronic Office.

Once the corresponding checks have been made to ensure that the candidate meets the requirements for access to the doctorate, the candidate's application for admission will be sent together with the proposal for tutoring/supervision to the academic committee of the corresponding Doctorate Program. The Academic Committee will issue the resolution on the application for admission.

The candidate will receive an email with the resolution of the procedure:

  1. Admitted: You can enroll at the beginning of the new enrollment period, in the same academic year of admission.
  2. Conditional admission: Conditional admission: If you are conditionally admitted, you will receive information on what documents you must provide to be able to make your admission effective, once the required condition has been met. If the candidate does not present the documentation within the indicated period, the request will be excluded. This admission will only be possible when the supply of places is greater than the demand.
  3. Excluded: The reason for the exclusion will be indicated.

ACCESS PLACES

5% of the places of each doctoral programme places are reserved for students with a recognised disability of 33% or higher. If these places were not filled, they would be offered to other students.

When formalising admission (or enrolment), students must provide a disability certificate, issued by the competent administration.

In cases where all the places offered are covered, a prioritised waiting list will be drawn up for the admitted candidates, in accordance with the published scales, who have not obtained a place. This prioritization will be carried out by each of the Academic Committees.

REQUIREMENTS

✅ Requirements for Access to Doctoral Studies

Check that you meet one of the following entry requirements:

  1. You have an official university master's degree or another Spanish degree of equivalent level.
  2. You have an equivalent foreign qualification (no prior approval is required). 

 

✅ Check the access requirements provided for by current regulations:

Students wishing to access a doctoral programme verified by RD 99/2011, must meet the requirements laid down in Article 6, amended by Royal Decree 576/2023, of July 4, which modifies Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, which regulates official doctoral studies.

Article 6. Requirements for access to a doctorate.

  1. In general, access to an official doctoral programme is available to persons in possession of a Spanish official bachelor's degree, or equivalent, and a university master's degree.
  1. Likewise, those who are in any of the following situations may access the programme:

a) Be in possession of official Spanish university degrees or equivalent Spanish degrees, provided that at least 300 ECTS credits have been passed in the set of these courses and accredit a level 3 of the Spanish Framework of Qualifications for Higher Education.

b) Be in possession of a degree obtained in accordance with foreign educational systems belonging to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), without the need for its  homologation, which accredits a level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework, provided that said degree qualifies for access to doctoral studies in the country in which it was issued. This admission will not imply, in any case, the homologation of the previous degree held by the interested party or its recognition for purposes other than access to doctoral studies.

c) Possession of a degree obtained in accordance with foreign educational systems other than the EHEA, without the need for its homologation, after verification by the university that it accredits a level of training equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's degree and that it qualifies in the country of issue of the degree for access to doctoral studies. This admission will not imply, in any case, the homologation of the previous degree held by the interested party or its recognition for purposes other than access to doctoral studies.


d) Possession of another Doctorate degree. 

e) University graduates who, after obtaining a training place in the corresponding access test for specialized health training places, have successfully completed at least two years of training in a program to obtain an official degree in one of the specialties in Health Sciences, may also access the programme.

DOCUMENTATION

 

1. Proof of identity

  • Copy of Foreigner Identification Number (NIE), legalized passport or European identity card

2. Doctoral programme tutor proposal document

  • Doctoral programme tutor proposal document. This proposal must be evaluated by the Academic Committee, which will check if the proposal meets the requirements established by the program and current regulations, and will assign the tutoring and supervision of the thesis.

3. Official university studies

3.1 University studies at Master’s degree level, or equivalent:

3.1.1 Official Master’s degree certificate

3.1.2 Studies completed in the EHEA (European Higher Education Area):

- Europass Diploma Supplement: an official document accompanying the degree, providing standardised and personalised information on the programme completed, learning outcomes, professional competences acquired, and the level of qualification within the higher education system of the issuing country.

3.1.3 Studies completed outside the EHEA (European Higher Education Area):

Official academic transcript with grades and credits, duration in academic years and the list of the subjects studied including, for each one, the course load and the grade obtained, and indicating the grading system.

3.2 University studies at Bachelor level, or equivalent

3.2.1 Official Bachelor's degree certificate

3.2.2 Studies completed in the EHEA (European Higher Education Area):

- Europass Diploma Supplement: an official document accompanying the degree, providing standardised and personalised information on the programme completed, learning outcomes, professional competences acquired, and the level of qualification within the higher education system of the issuing country.

3.2.3 Studies completed outside the EHEA (European Higher Education Area):

Official academic transcript with grades and credits (specifying duration in academic years and the list of the subjects studied including, for each one, the course load and the grade obtained, and indicating the grading system).

 

4. Accreditation of training equivalent to a official Spanish Master's degree*:

  • Certificate issued by the foreign university where the Master’s degree was completed, stating that:

- the studies give access to the doctoral (research) phase in the country where the university is located, and the qualification corresponds to EQF Level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework.

The study of the equivalence of a foreign degree to a Spanish Master's degree, for acces to PhD studies, will take effect once the student enrolls in the first year, and pays the fee set by the price decree of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED

 

University degrees issued abroad

All documents must be officially issued by the competent authorities, in accordance with the legal system of the country where the qualification was awarde.

Legalisation of documents

  • As a general rule, foreign academic documents must be legalised through diplomatic channels or, where applicable, by means of the Hague Convention apostille.

Legalisation is not required for documents issued by :

  • Member States of the European Union or signatories to the Agreements on the European Economic Area, provided that there are no doubts as to their authenticity and legitimacy, or as to their official nature.

How to legalise documents:

a) Hague Convention countries :

Only the Hague Apostille is required, that is obtained from the competent authority of the country of origin.

There is no need for diplomatic legalization.

b) Countries without an Agreement (diplomatic channel):

Documents must be legalised through the following steps:

1. Legalization at the Ministry of Education of the country where the degree was awarded. 

2. Legalization at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of that country. 

3. Legalisation at the Spanish Consulate or Embassy in the country of origin.

 

Translation of documents 

If the documents are issued in a language other than Spanish, Catalan or English, they must be accompanied by an official translation into one of these languages.

Official translation may be carried out by:

- A Spanish diplomatic or consular representation abroad.

- The diplomatic or consular representation in Spain of the applicant’s country of nationality, or of the country where the document was issued.

- A sworn translators authorised or registered in Spain.

 

Additional notes

  1. All documents submitted for access and admission may initially be scanned copies of the originals.
    However, original documents or certified copies must be presented at the time of PhD enrolment.
  2. If, at the time of application, the required legalisation or Hague Apostille has not yet been provided, the admission decision may be issued as Conditional Admission, pending submission of the required documentation.
  3. For studies completed at the University of Lleida (UdL), it is only necessary to submit the official academic transcript containing the relevant information.
